(Steven St. John)This was my first sports assignment since, well, last years New Mexico State High School Basketball tournament. Obviously sports isn’t a big emphasis of my work, but it’s fun picking up the occasional assignment documenting these student athletes who play with such heart and dedication.

Viva la Tribune!

February 23 marks the anniversary of the publishing of the final edition of The Albuquerque Tribune, and alumni gathered locally as we do each year.

It’s great to have an opportunity to catch up with everyone. Some of the photo department folks I see nearly every week or less, but many others I see much less frequently. So much has changed in such a short amount of time. The growth of the kids in these pictures help mark the passage of time. I hope all those who missed it this year can join us next year.

I’ve been having fun shooting in camera square format black & white with my GF-1, a fresh way to see and compose pictures for my eye. If anyone wants copies of these images, just double-click on the picture to access my archive where you download them for free.

I got a call to make a last minute portrait of Albert Prieto-Marquez, Ph.D. Paleontologist, and Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History for the Gallup Independent. The fossil in the top picture was found near Gallup NM and is part of his current research.

I got a rare chance to peek inside local jewelry manufacturer and antiques dealer Gertrude Zachary‘s amazing downtown home recently for The Wall Street Journal. You can see the photos on their site here. If you’d really like to see more, double-click any of the photos above or follow this link to my archive where you can see the whole take. Big thanks to Jakob Schiller for helping with lighting. We had to move quickly, and it was a challenge with so many rooms, so many chandeliers. I’m just glad we didn’t break anything of more value than an old Nikon SB-28.
