Highly recommended…

This is so worth the investment of time in watching. The
brilliant Scott Strazzante presents a project 14 years in the
making.

Update

Sorry it has been so long since I posted. I’ve been really busy, studying Spanish four hours a day in 1 on 1 classes and tons of studying on my own. I’ve learned a lot, but there is still so much to learn. Poco a poco.

Here are a few photos of the local weavers association, and one from parade for the Rabin Ajaw pageant, which picks Guatemala’s Maya Indian beauty queen in Cobán.

More soon, I promise.

Camino Seguro

I made an all to brief visit to Camino Seguro, aka Safe Passage.

“Our mission is to empower the poorest, at-risk children of families working in the community of the Guatemala City garbage dump, by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. We share the vision that within a safe and caring environment, every child participates in an integrated program that fosters optimism, good health, educational achievement, self-esteem, and confidence. Children and parents discover that, through their own efforts, they can move beyond poverty.”

They are some wonderful people, doing great work. I look forward to spending a little more time there in the future. Feel free to make a donation, I doubt you can find a more worthy cause

Two from the road

I used photoshop to merge five photos to make a panoramic at Lake Atitlan, its just too much to capture in a single frame. It’s not perfect, and I like that about it, the flaws give it more character.

The second photo is from the market in Chichicastenango, but it wasn’t market day, so there was actually room to walk around. It’s b&w because I didn’t feel the color helped it much. Gotta love shafts of light and smoke, but the light only lasted a few minutes.

Koreans in Guate…

Who knew? There is something like 30,000 Koreans living here in Guatemala City.

I only mention it because I went to a Oxford Language Center yesterday to make some pictures for their web site and print ads. They have a dozen or so Korean students, and would like to add more. It felt really good to get out and make some pictures with something other than my G9 point and shoot.

Later today I’m heading to Panachel, on the shores Lake Atitlan with some friends.
