While it’s not Capa’s Mexican suitcase, I did get a call from the lab reminding me to pick up some rolls of film I shot with my Holga in El Salvador, 2010. We don’t need no stinkin’ Instagram!

With postponement of an event billed as the world’s largest now back on, Matanzas have been in the news of late.

I had a wonderful opportunity to attend and document the one below recently in the South Valley. As it is here, Matanzas are traditionally a family and community-gathering event, with friends and neighbors helping in the labor-intensive work of processing a large animal. While turning this into a worlds-largest event doesn’t really have the same feel to me, I hope to cover the event in Valencia County whenever it is rescheduled. Stay tuned.

If you are in New Mexico and have a chance, pick up today’s Albuquerque Journal which has a feature story about my exhibition at  Instituto Cervantes. This is the main reason I’ve been such a slacker about posting work on this blog, and I’ll try to do better in the coming months. Hope to see anyone reading this at the opening for the show!

I’ve been really bad about posting of late, but the good news is that I have been busy so there is no shortage of work to share. Here is my take from a story I did for The Communicator recently on rookie jockey Jude Baca from Santa Rosa who is already winning races at the Downs of Albuquerque. My friend Jakob Schiller did a feature on Jude while he was still in high school, getting ready for prom, so check it out too.

On the left is John Link, a composer in NYC. On the right is John Ledwith, a Consultant & Executive Coach at Sandia National Laboratories here in Albuquerque. It’s amazing how many people overlook having a professional portrait for their online business profiles. These are very different from my documentary work, but they are another tool in my bag of services to offer my clients, which help support my documentary work by allowing me to buy food and pay my mortgage.

Congratulations to the beautiful couple! It was an honor to document such a wonderful ceremony. You can see more photos from the wedding on my archive where prints are also available for purchase.

My first assignment for the New York Times was this portrait of Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios. He is perhaps the most powerful comic-book geek in the movie business today. I always want to make great pictures, regardless of how big or small the publication or story. My hands were tied a bit on this one, as everything on set of The Avengers is top secret, so I can’t tell you about the big movie stars I met or how the movie ends. While I do like this picture, it was a bit frustrating because there were so many amazing places around the sets that would have been great if we could have gotten clearance to make a picture around it. All that is just to say, I want to get another chance to shoot for The Times and show them what I can do if I’m allowed to sink my teeth into an assignment. Thanks to Robert for getting the screen photo when the picture was on the Times home page in the early hours.
